Staff Sergeant Kyle Robert McKee for the Order of St. Michael, Bronze Award, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to Army Aviation over a distinguished 16-year career. As a Noncommissioned Officer, UH-60M Black Hawk Utility Helicopter Mechanic and Crew chief, SSG McKee exemplified the highest standards of leadership, technical expertise, and dedication. His legacy of excellence, integrity, and sacrifice continues to inspire Army Aviation professionals and embodies the ideals of the Bronze Order of Saint Michael. This award reflects our deepest respect and enduring gratitude for his service to Army Aviation and the United States of America.

SSG McKee’s career with the U.S. Army started when he entered Basic Training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 2003. Upon completion of Basic Training, he then shipped to Fort Eustis, Virginia where he completed Advanced Individual Training as a UH-60 Black Hawk Utility Helicopter Repairer. Upon completion of all training, he then transitioned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky where he was assigned to the General Support Aviation Battalion (GSAB), 6th Battalion, 101st Aviation, Regiment (6-101), 101st Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). From the start of his career, he made an immediate impact on his organization, and his attention to detail and motivation immediately caught the attention of Senior Leaders within the organization.

Kyle consistently demonstrated an exceptional ability to keenly focus his team on the operational and strategic program requirements as he clearly demonstrated time and time again as acting Platoon Sergeant. In early 2005, he oversaw 14 Soldiers and was responsible for 4 UH-60L helicopters while supporting the 101st Airborne Division’s readiness assessment exercise at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, Louisiana, to determine the operational readiness of 6-101 GSAB, and the 101st

CAB to ensure the unit met the Army’s speed, range, and endurance requirements in preparation for the upcoming deployment to Iraq.

The Fall of 2005 would prove to be an incredibly busy time for Kyle. At a breakneck pace, he divided his attention and resources to achieve several significant objectives. He consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, technical expertise, and unwavering dedication during this critical period. His ability to manage multiple high-stakes objectives simultaneously was instrumental in ensuring mission success and operational excellence. Amid the demanding environment of combat operations in Iraq, Kyle supervised the complex loadout of four UH-60L helicopters, nine Soldiers, and other essential ground support equipment for redeployment to Fort Campbell. This task required meticulous planning, coordination, and execution under tight deadlines and challenging conditions. His leadership ensured the seamless transition of personnel and assets, safeguarding mission readiness and operational continuity. In addition to overseeing the redeployment, Kyle’s commitment to maintenance excellence was evident in his efforts to sustain an impressive 84% operational readiness rate for the platoon’s equipment during the entire 15-month deployment. This achievement alone was critical in the Battalion’s and Brigade’s ability to support ongoing combat operations, directly contributing to the unit’s ability to execute its missions effectively. His proactive approach to maintenance and resource management minimized downtime and maximized the availability of mission-critical assets throughout pre-deployment, deployment, and re-deployment; an accomplishment normally trusted to the unit’s more senior and seasoned Noncommissioned Officers.

Early in 2006, Kyle completed a Permanent Change of Station from Fort Campbell, Kentucky to the Republic of (South) Korea’s 3rd Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment (3-2) GSAB, 2nd CAB, 2nd Infantry “Warrior” Division. During his assignment to Camp Humphreys in South Korea, Kyle was immediately selected for flight duty in one of the highest OPTEMPO units on the Peninsula. As a Crew Chief in a Command Aviation Company, Kyle had the responsibility of ensuring the Army’s most Senior Leaders within the Pacific Theater had timely and reliable air transportation to meet all Key Leader Engagements (KLE) across the operational environment. The Command Aviation Company stationed at Camp Humphreys, South Korea, serves as a critical pillar of the United States Army’s operational capabilities in the Pacific Theater. Nestled in the heart of the Republic of Korea, this elite unit is tasked with providing unparalleled aviation support, ensuring the readiness, mobility, and effectiveness of U.S. and allied forces in one of the most strategically significant regions in the World. While operating in this dynamic and complex environment, Kyle was entrusted with a multifaceted mission that included airlift operations, reconnaissance, command and control, and logistical support for the entire region. Kyle’s contributions were integral to the success of numerous multinational exercises; including Operation Foal Eagle, Operation Key Resolve, and Operation Ulchi Freedom Guardian, the theater’s capstone annual training event which is designed to strengthen interoperability and reinforce the alliance between the United States and South Korea.

Upon his return from overseas in 2008, Kyle assessed and was selected to serve in one of the Army’s most elite Aviation organizations, the 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (1-160th SOAR). The 1-160th SOAR is a force multiplier for the Army and the broader U.S. military. Its ability to provide precision aviation support in the most challenging environments ensures that American and Partner Special Operations Forces can execute their missions with maximum effectiveness and minimal risk. The unit’s contributions are vital to maintaining the Army’s dominance in special operations and its ability to respond to emerging threats around the globe. This unit is an indispensable asset to the Army, embodying the highest standards of professionalism, skill, and dedication. Its unique capabilities and unwavering commitment to mission success make it one of the most respected and feared aviation units in the World. Kyle immediately made an impact to this World-Class organization. Upon his selection to the 160th SOAR, he immediately distinguished himself as a leader and expert in precision aviation. His deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan supported some of the most critical and time-sensitive missions, including high-value target raids, hostage rescues, and counter-insurgency operations. His contributions directly enabled the success of elite units such as U.S. Army Rangers, Special Forces, Navy SEALs, and Delta Force, reinforcing the 160th SOAR’s reputation as one of the most respected aviation units in the world.

In late 2010, Staff Sergeant McKee conducted his second permanent change of station to Fort Wainwright, Alaska where he initially served as the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment (1-53) GSAB’s Battalion Standardization Instructor (SI). The Battalion Standardization Instructor is a cornerstone of aviation operations within the battalion. His responsibilities encompassed training, standardization, safety, and mission execution, and ensured that all personnel operate at the highest level of proficiency and professionalism. By enforcing standards and fostering continuous improvement, an SI plays a vital role in maintaining the battalion’s readiness and effectiveness in support of Army missions. In 2011, Staff Sergeant McKee was selected above all of his peers to serve as Platoon Sergeant for the Battalion’s Maintenance Company, a position normally withheld for the most Senior Noncommission Officer in the rank of Sergeant First Class within the Battalion. He served with distinction and received laudatory comments from his Brigade Leadership upon completion of his Tour.

In 2012, Staff Sergeant McKee began another chapter in his military career when he completed another permanent change of station from Alaska to Joint Base Lewis-McCord, Washington. While assigned there, he initially served as a UH-60 Black Hawk Technical Inspector where he supported both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for the unit’s 30 UH-60M Assault Platforms. His attention to detail and high degree of motivation led to him being selected to serve as the Section Sergeant for the Battalion’s Maintenance Platoon. In 2013, SSG McKee applied for and was selected to attend Language School at The Presidio of Monterey, California where he trained for and became proficient as a Student of Arabic. This would prove critical to the overall mission of the Army as the majority of its contingency deployments were in Southwest Asia, an area largely dominated by Arabic Language. Upon completion of language training, he was assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he served as a Technical Inspector for almost two years from 2015 to 2017, before being selected to once again serve in the 160th SOAR. He transitioned to the 2nd Battalion’s (2-160 SOAR) Aviation Flight Company stationed in Fort Bragg, where he continued to serve with distinction in this elite Aviation Unit. He served honorably as a member of 2-160th SOAR until transitioning to his final assignment in Sharm El Shak, Egypt in July of 2020, where he served as a member of the Multinational Forces and Observers; an ongoing Peacekeeping Mission that was in its 38th year of an extremely important stability mission for that region.

On November 12, 2020, Staff Sergeant McKee made the ultimate sacrifice while serving as part of the Multinational Forces and Observers in Egypt. His courage, dedication, and selflessness in defense of peace and stability in the region exemplify the highest ideals of Army Aviation and the United States Army. Even after his passing, SSG McKee’s exceptional performance and leadership continue to inspire those who served alongside him. His legacy lives on through the Soldiers he mentored and the missions he supported, leaving an indelible mark on Army Aviation. It is with profound respect and admiration that we nominate Staff Sergeant Kyle Robert McKee for the Bronze Order of Saint Michael, recognizing his extraordinary contributions and sacrifice for the Army and the Nation.
